Vaccines are designed to induce a strong and long-lasting immune response by producing memory T cells and B cells. The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, which is given in early childhood, and the tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis (Tdap) vaccine, which is given every 10 years, are known to induce a protective response against the diseases from which the vaccines get their name. But these vaccines can have an unexpected bonus: it’s possible that they also create cross-reactive memory T cells that are able to respond to protein targets called antigens that are present in other microbes that cause disease cause – including the viral antigens in SARS-CoV-2. The concept is that existing memory T cells, which were generated by a previous MMR or Tdap vaccination and activated by a SARS-CoV-2 infection, give the immune system a head start in responding to SARS-CoV- 2 and thereby the risk of severe COVID-19.

To investigate whether the MMR and Tdap vaccines offer additional protection against COVID-19, researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital performed laboratory-based analyzes using sensitive, new techniques to detect and characterize T cell responses to antigens. They used these techniques to analyze the response of T cells isolated from the blood of COVID-19 convalescent patients and patients vaccinated against COVID-19 to antigens of SARS-CoV-2 and the MMR and Tdap – Measure vaccines. Working with staff at the Cleveland Clinic, they also used a large, well-commented cohort of COVID-19 patients and found that previous MMR or Tdap vaccination was associated with decreased disease severity. “Our Cleveland Clinic colleagues observed an association where people with COVID-19 who had either MMR or Tdap vaccines went to intensive care or died much less often,” said co-author Andrew Lichtman, MD, PhD one Immunologist and Principal Investigator in Brigham’s Department of Pathology and Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School. “Although previous smaller studies suggested a similar association, our in-depth epidemiological analysis, along with our basic research, suggest that these commonly administered vaccines can protect against serious illness.”

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, we know that routine vaccinations for children and adolescents have decreased significantly,” said corresponding author Tanya Mayadas, PhD, senior researcher in Brigham’s Department of Pathology and professor of pathology at Harvard Medical School. “Our results underline the importance of routine vaccinations for children and adults. We know that vaccines protect against devastating diseases, and we are now seeing increasing evidence that some of them offer some protection against serious COVID-19 disease. “

The team’s investigation was triggered by an unexpected observation. Mayadas, her postdoctoral fellow Vijaya Mysore, PhD, and colleagues found in laboratory experiments with COVID-19 convalescent blood that whenever they observed an increased T cell response to SARS-CoV-2 proteins, also an increased response to proteins from MMR and Tdap, which they had used as controls. In a second analysis, Mayadas and colleagues teamed up with investigators from the Cleveland Clinic to examine the epidemiological evidence. The Cleveland Clinic team conducted a retrospective cohort study of data from more than 75,000 patients seen in the Cleveland Clinic healthcare system in Ohio or Florida who tested positive for COVID-19 between March 8, 2020 and March 31, 2021 had been. The team used a statistical method known as overlap propensity score weighting to estimate two disease severity endpoints (COVID-related hospitalization and COVID-related ICU admission or death) for patients vaccinated against MMR or Tdap , and compare those who were not vaccinated. The authors note that while their laboratory-based results are bolstered by the epidemiological observations, more work is needed to assess the relationship between the MMR and Tdap vaccinations and the severity of COVID-19 disease to determine if the relationship is causal. Prospective studies of vaccinations and patient outcomes can help distinguish correlation from causality.

“With regard to COVID-19 vaccines, our results predict that MMR and Tdap, while not replacing COVID-19 vaccines, may offer greater and more permanent protection, possibly against emerging spike variants than the COVID-19- Vaccine alone, ”said Mayadas. “And in areas where the COVID-19 vaccines are not available, they could protect infected people from developing serious diseases.”

iDTRONIC presents NFC RFID tags for industrial applications
iDTRONIC has announced that its RFID sleeve tags are now available with NFC forum compatible chip types. The tags are designed for industrial applications, contain a PA6 nylon housing and were developed for attachment to plastic pipes, cables or cylindrical containers. They can be secured with a wire loop or zip tie through two mounting holes, the company reports. In addition to its UHF and HF transponder ICs, the company is expanding its available product line with the I-Code SLI-X and NTAG ICs from NXP.

Mr Biden’s frustrations with Facebook began before the pandemic. The creature believed to have lived 105 million years ago is the largest known flying reptile on the Australian continent and was first described in an article published Monday in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology.

Tim Richards, a University of Queensland graduate student, led a research team at UQ’s Dinosaur Lab at UQ’s School of Biological Sciences to describe the specimen.

Richards said that by comparing a portion of the jawbone to other pterosaur fossils, the researchers were able to estimate the specimen ‘s proportions and determine that it was an entirely new species.

They found that it probably had a three-foot-long skull with a pointed muzzle, relatively long wings, short hind legs and no tail, and was covered with a slight downy layer.

“It wasn’t built to eat broccoli,” said Richards. “That would make flying the magpie seem very trivial. It would have been a terrifying sight. It is only a few meters wingspan shorter than a hang glider.

The animal belonged to a group of pterosaurs known as Appendixuerians who thrived for 200 million years, lived on every continent, and specialized in their environment.

It got the scientific name Thapunngaka shawi – a combination of the Wanamara words for “spear” and “mouth” and the last name of the person who discovered the fossil.

The remains were found in Wanamara Land near Richmond in northwest Queensland in June 2011 by Len Shaw, a city councilor who looked for fossils during his lunch hour by carefully pouring water on the rock face with his front loader to close them identify bones from rock.

When Shaw noticed the maxillary sinuses, he immediately contacted a local museum, Kronosaurus Korner.

Richards said pterosaur fossils are extremely rare in the world because they are so adapted to life in flight that their bones are only millimeters thick, hollow, and extremely fragile.

“Pterosaurs don’t keep well,” said Richards. “Most of these things likely fell into the sea when they died and were devoured by sea predators. Many of them would never have made it to the sea floor to start this fossilization process. “

About 100 million years ago, two-thirds of what is now Queensland was covered by the Eromanga Sea, a shallow body of water that stretched across the border of the Northern Territory down to New South Wales.

Steve Salisbury, co-author of the paper and graduate supervisor of Richards, said the find was particularly significant because pterosaurs – which are different from dinosaurs – became extinct by the end of the Cretaceous Period and had no living relatives.

The study, published in July, warns that impending changes in the lunar orbit could lead to record floods on Earth in the next decade. The “wobbling” of the moon is a natural occurrence that occurs over time. The gravitational pull of the moon creates our tides on earth, so any fluctuation in its orbit has a direct impact on how high the water rises along our coast.

For an area that is already used to harassment or “Sunday floods”, the possibility of increased flood risk is not welcome news.

“It is possible that we may have these very rapid climbs where the tide goes from a few times a year to many times a year, 100 times a year,” predicts Hamlington. “It’s just getting a lot harder to live with.”

Combined with the existing flood hazard from Hampton Roads and the constant rise in sea levels, any additional flooding caused by the change in the moon’s orbit could be devastating to our region.

Over the years, Orrock and his team have followed the slow but steady rise in our sea levels and the devastating effects it can have.

“The creeping is sometimes not that noticeable, but then suddenly there is a storm and you think, wow, that was a lot of water,” says Orrock.

What worries meteorologist Orrock about the future of Hampton Roads is our recent past. The last time our area experienced major tidal floods that lasted for days was in 2009 in the northeast. Then flooded cars drifted down Boush Street in waist-high water.

Orrock believes we will see such images again.

Austin, Texas – (BUSINESS WIRE) – Astrotech Corporation (NASDAQ: ASTC) announced today that its subsidiary AgLAB Inc. has hired Joe Levinthal, a hemp and cannabis industry veteran and mass spectrometry expert, as Chief Science Officer to lead AgLAB’s product development team.

Joe brings an extensive background in using highly complex scientific tools to develop hemp and cannabis products and has worked with some of the leading companies in the industry.

“As a consultant to AgLAB, I was very intrigued by the breakthrough technology that the AgLAB team developed. I am excited to join the team to help AgLAB advance its technology and bring several products to market that are very valuable additions to any hemp and cannabis extraction and distillation laboratory, ”said Levinthal.

AgLAB developed the AgLAB-1000-D2 to optimize the distillation of hemp and cannabis concentrates. Initial results show that we can improve the yield during the distillation process by providing the processor with information in near real time so that he can make the necessary adjustments.
